Two nights of T&A

Montevideo

Arriving in Montevideo with no expectations, as capital cities always just tend to be large metropolitans,  we loved it. Little did we know that Montevideo has the longest carnaval celebration in South America. A total of 40 days of feathers, drums, music, costumes and booty shakin. It was a friday and the pre carnaval festivities were to start that evening. Colourful floats, bands, fire trucks, body paint and incredible costumes started parading down the streets.

Bands, the music they played was amazing!

Every mask was unique

Waking up the next morning with the sound of drums in our heads we jumped on rental bikes and road along the sea wall. In the 35 degree weather it was necessary to stop every few km's for a quick dip at one of the many beaches along the way.

Laundromat Amy!

Back at the hostel we found out tonight's carnaval celebration was to be bigger and better than the night before! With the sun setting we walked towards the sound of the drums! (drums=booty)

Our VIP section seats for free!

We had the best view!

More elaborate costumes, bigger floats, more drummers and talent than the night before!

Wandering the streets the next day with images of (girls?) still in our heads we watched the locals enjoy their lazy Sunday. We didn't see anyone without their mate cup in hand. Mate is a tea drank from a straw from a hollowed out gourd. You will always see the locals carrying around a thermos of water and a cup full of mushy green mate.

Mate with thermos. It tastes disgusting!

But we still bought our own cups and straws :)

Empanadas!
