End of the world

Ushuaia

How long can a person sit in one seat staring at nothing, you ask? The answer is 24 hours! So when we were entering the 37th and final hour on the bus from Bariloche to Ushuaia there was very little sanity left over. There were so many reasons to be happy to have arrived, we were at the "fin del mundo", end of the world, it was almost Christmas, finally and foremost our booking on a ship bound for Antarctica had been finalized. We had a few days in Ushuaia to explore the surroundings and rent cold weather gear.

End of the World

Sometime during a snow storm in their so called summer, I understood why Ushuaia was originally a penile colony, on the positive, it was light out until eleven at night on the solstice. We decided to do a hike up to a glacial lake just outside town. Having previously imagined this area to be rolling hills with trees and grassy planes I was awestruck by the size and beauty of the rocky snow swept mountains surrounding. Our hike led us along an unkept muddy path past the numerous beaver dams (yes beavers, imported here from Canada by fur traders they now occupy all of Tierra del Fuego) and up to Lago Esmeralda.
